Nearly
as amazing as the Oregon coastline, Washington has its own spectacular
coastline to share with visitors. Just on the other side of the
Astoria-Megler bridge in Astoria,
Oregon, the Washington coastline begins its own beautiful climb
up towards Canada. With just as many spectacular capes and gorgeous
beaches, the Washington coast beckons visitors to come explore its
own incredible sights. |
| One
of the first stops heading up the Washington coastline is North
Head Lighthouse. Construction began on this 65 foot tower in 1896,
and it was first lit on May 16, 1898. North Head is one of the windiest
places in the United States, setting numerous windspeed records,
including one on January 29, 1921 when winds were clocked up to
126 mph before the instrument blew away. On another occasion, the
ferocious winds forced a wild duck to fly out of control and into
the lantern room, crashing through the window and chipping the lens. |

Even
with the high winds, this gorgeous spot along the Washington coastline
encourages visitors to brave the weather and enjoy the spectacular
scenery. Tours are available to the top of North Head Lighthouse
for a very small fee, which is used for lighthouse maintenance.
The tour is well worth the entrance fee as, even on a foggy day,
the view is simply spectacular from the top. |
Also,
for those who love lighthouses, just a few miles away is the entrance
to Cape Disappointment. It's QUITE a hike to get to the lighthouse
itself - a total of 1.5 miles round trip and (believe it or not)
uphill both ways! The trail is not easy, but the view of the lighthouse
and coast line are simply breathtaking. Just take water along and
take breaks as needed. This isn't a trail for the weary, but the
view is indeed spectacular. |
