Tillamook, Oregon

Tillamook Cheese Factory

People who like cheese absolutely LOVE Tillamook, Oregon. This small coastal town has been called "Wisconsin dropped on the Oregon Coast", and indeed the Tillamook Cheese Factory is often the first stop for visitors for this reason: They make spectacular cheese! Naturally, Tillamook's other dairy products, including yogurt and milk, are magnificent as well, not to mention their sinfully delicious ice cream. But, cheese is their speciality and they do it well - to the tune of over 30 million pounds of cheese each year! Visitors can go on a self-guided tour (assisted by videos) of the factory and watch the cheese-making process first hand. And of course, following the tour, visitors are encouraged to go through the "sample line" where they can try several different types and flavors of Tillamook cheese. This place is a must stop for dairy lovers!

Along with the tempting cheese factory, the city of Tillamook also invites tourists to explore both natural and aviation history by welcoming visitors to the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum and Tillamook Naval Air Museum. The Pioneer Museum boasts quite an extensive natural history collection - one of the largest in the state. While at the south edge of town, travellers can stop in at the Naval Air Museum which houses over two dozen of the finest vintage flying aircrafts in the nation, inside a World War II blimp hanger. The hanger is the largest wooden structure in the world, and even those not wishing to visit inside are often impressed by the building itself as they travel on down Highway 101.

Munson Creek Falls

Continuing south, approximately eight miles south of Tillamook on Highway 101, signs direct visitors to view Munson Creek Falls. The country roads leading back to the falls are quite rough and there are more potholes than could possibly be counted. However, once you reach the parking area and take the short, fairly easy quarter mile hike back into the woods, these magnificent falls make visitors quickly forget about the rough driving to get there. No matter the season, Munson Creek Falls are indeed one of Oregon's spectacular natural gifts to those who are willing to make the trip.
